Your first session.

No couch. No silence. No analysis. Just a conversation — and the beginning of something that helps.

Before you go

You don't need to prepare. You don't need to write notes or rehearse what to say. You don't need to have your whole story figured out. Just show up.

A few things that help:

  • Find a quiet, private space if it's online
  • Have water nearby
  • Give yourself 10 minutes after — don't schedule something immediately after
  • It's okay to be nervous. It's normal. Everyone is.

What actually happens

Here's the honest version of what a first session looks like:

Your therapist will welcome you. They'll ask a little about what brought you here. They might ask about your history — family, relationships, work — but they won't interrogate you. They'll explain how they work and what to expect going forward.

You'll talk. They'll listen. They might ask questions that make you think. They might point out something you hadn't noticed. Or they might just let you talk for a while.

That's it. It's a conversation. A structured, caring conversation with someone who's trained to help you understand yourself better.

What it isn't

  • It's not a test — there are no right answers
  • It's not a diagnosis session — you're not being evaluated
  • It's not a commitment — you can decide after if it's a fit
  • It's not advice — they won't tell you what to do
  • It's not magic — you won't feel fixed after one session
  • It's not uncomfortable silence — your therapist knows how to guide the conversation

What you might feel

You might feel relieved. You might feel exhausted. You might feel like nothing happened. You might feel emotional. You might feel lighter. You might feel weird.

All of that is normal. Therapy stirs things up. The first session is just the beginning — it's about meeting and seeing if it's a fit, not about fixing everything in 50 minutes.

Questions worth asking

Your first session is also your chance to learn about your therapist. Don't be afraid to ask:

  • 'How do you usually work with people dealing with [what you're going through]?'
  • 'What does a typical session look like with you?'
  • 'How will we know if it's working?'
  • 'What if I feel like it's not a good fit?'
  • 'How do you handle sessions that feel heavy?'

After the session

Take a breath. Sit with it. You don't have to decide right away whether this is your person.

Ask yourself:

  • Did I feel heard?
  • Did I feel safe?
  • Could I see myself opening up to this person over time?
  • Did their approach feel like what I need?

If yes — book the next session. If not — that's okay. Come back to Truer and try someone else. Finding the right therapist is like finding the right pair of shoes. Sometimes the first one doesn't fit, and that's not your fault or theirs. We'll keep helping until you find the one that does.

A reminder

You did the hardest part already. You reached out. You showed up. Everything after this is just walking the path — and you don't have to walk it alone.
